Bigg Robb ! If you're like me, your interest for him increased
since you saw him on the cover, read his interview and listened
to him on the Cd offered with the last issue of our favorite
French magazine FUNK-U !!!
It's the occasion for me to thank once again Mr. Wonder B
(great contributor to the chat and the forum of this site
by the way ;o) for his precious help and his incredible Funky
spirit. He is always available to provide us with good (and
personal) advice to fulfill our quest of the best current
or past Funk sounds.
But come back to Bigg Robb
now : Mc, sound engineer, and full member of Zapp (always
on tour in the United States
so we still hope to see
them around one day
), also songwriter for Bootsy and
Freekbass (Only for those reasons, you should listen carefully
to what I have to tell you ;o) He had released his first solo
project a few month ago and experts considered it Excellent
I'll be straight : I never heard "Cheddar-Cheddar"
but the second contribution to great music "Grown
Folk's Music" (he just sent to me) is a must that
any real Funkateer has to get ABSOLUTELY as everything is
in !!! ;o) It's at the same time a tribute to the Old School
and a great mix of new sounds serving the almighty Funk !
In Funk he Trusts
No doubt he lives this music 2000 %,
24H/24H, and 365 days a year!!!
And I bet all nostalgics of
Zapp music now if they were listening to the ultra Funky tracks
below :
>> "The Bigg Robb Show"
(with evident lyrics "I love the Old School" and
"Ain't nothing like a Bigg Robb party cause a Bigg Robb
Party don't stop"),
>> "Twerk it",
>> "Cutie Pie",
>> even "The Bigg Woman Song" (a kind
of Doo Wop Funk),
>> or " Country Girls " (very
trendy Hip Hop sound)
not to believe that it could be unpublished work of the mythic
group ;o)
What else can I say about "Grown
Folks Music (1968 remix)" ?
It is maybe the most original track in the absolute Funkytune
chapter; the only one including a Horns section and that's
IRRESISTIBLE
Still, what is most interesting
and enjoyable is he doesn't limit himself to Funk (in which
he's still gorgeous) as when he's playing a 'side' style music
(Ballads, Hip Hop, R'n'B and Soul), the result is exactly
the same: a real success!!! ;o))
Among
the ballads, I suggest "Chocolate Starz Part 2"
and its flow will make you melt : I love the voice of Bigg
Woo !!! or "Honey Love" another
R'n'B hit in the purest style of Next (I'm a great fan) with
a glance to Zapp. And at last, "Quality Time"
a mix of soul and deep voice, a little like Marvin.
I advise Soul fans to carefully
listen to "Tune Up" and "Southern
Ladies" following the pure tradition of Soul bands
of the great time, like The Temptations for example
For a more contemporary R'n'B/Hip
Hop style, I recommend "The Body Song" on
which the magic voice of Mama Bigg (Bigg's protégée),
heavy and powerful, is marvelous even if the track is rather
conventional... And even better, "I Miss You"
is a little jewel that gives you emotions thanks to a simple
melody and a perfectly mastered voice. But stay away from
the speakers because this girl could give you a cold with
her blowing
For sure, she grew up listening to Soul
& Gospel, that's unbelievable otherwise
;o)
In conclusion, this record is
a real perfection (you need a piece of evidence ? I told you
about every track, none of them deserves to be ignored ;o)
It's one of the best demonstrations of Black Music highness
I have heard in a long. Any Funkateer would be satisfied by
it and that's why I don't hesitate to mark it 10/10!!!
